Downtown Robbinsville pictured from the air. This secluded mountain town is the County seat. Graham County has a population of only about 7,300 making it a great place to escape the hectic life. Microtel is located at the intersection of US 129 and Hwy 143 near center of photo. Graham County has many tranquil valleys and two-thirds of the land is National Forest. There are hundreds of square miles of natural forests to explore. Lake Santeetlah is one of the most pristine lakes in America with more than 70% of its shoreline designated National Forest Lands. Great for pontooning, jet skiing, swimming, and fishing. Waterfalls are special places in Graham County. There are numerous falls of all sizes secluded in the forests. Have one all to yourself away from the crowds. The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest offers both extended hikes for the adventurous and short hikes to view the rare virgin forest with trees so large it take 5 adults to join hands around their trunks. Bring your lunch and picnic by Santeetlah Creek. The Tail of the Dragon with 318 curves in 11 miles attracts motorcyclists and sport car enthusiasts from all of the world. The Appalachian Trail winds its way through Graham County on its way from Georgia to Maine. Flyfishing in Graham County has a national reputation and one of the few places where native mountain trout can be found. Local guides are available. Appalachian History and Music can be found in Graham County. The Stecoah Valley Center, the Ramp Festival, the 4th of July Celebration and other local events bring out true southern mountain culture for all to enjoy. Visit Cherokee Chief Junaluska's Grave and the Cherokee Museum. Crafts, both Native American and local artisans, can be found throughout the county. Fontana Dam is another nearby attraction for the entire family. Take a tour into the dam itself. Fontana Lake offers some thirty miles of fishing and water sports.
